Royal Sundaram bike insurance comes from Royal Sundaram General Insurance, a Chennai-based insurer that was the first private sector general insurer licensed by the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI), in 2000. Sundaram Finance holds 50% of the company and Ageas Insurance International holds 40%, according to both Royal Sundaram and ICRA's rating report of November 2024.
The insurer states a network of 8,000+ cashless garages and a two-wheeler add-on list that includes an enhanced personal accident cover of up to ₹50 lakh. This review sets out its plans, premium range, claim process and the gaps in what it publishes, with strengths and limits side by side.
| Point | Detail, as stated by Royal Sundaram |
|---|---|
| Licensed | 2000, the first private general insurer licensed by IRDAI |
| Ownership | Sundaram Finance 50%, Age as 40%, other Indian shareholders 10% |
| Cashless garages | 8,000+ network garages across India |
| Claims settled | ₹2,500 crore+ across all lines of business in FY25 |
| Motor claims helpline | 1800-568-9999, available 24x7 |

The claims figure covers all of Royal Sundaram's business, not only motor or two-wheeler claims, so it shows scale rather than two-wheeler performance.
Owners with a network garage nearby. A stated 8,000+ garages gives a reasonable chance of a cashless workshop close to home.
It suits less well an owner who places heavy weight on a published two-wheeler claim settlement ratio, since the insurer does not show one on its bike pages.
Royal Sundaram publishes policy documents for an annual Two-Wheeler Package Policy and a Two Wheeler Long Term Package Policy. Both combine the core covers below.
| Cover | What it pays for |
|---|---|
| Own damage (OD) | Loss of or damage to the bike from accident, fire, explosion, self-ignition, lightning, theft, riot, strike, earthquake and other listed perils |
| Liability to third parties | Legal liability for death or injury to others, without an upper limit, and damage to others' property up to ₹1 lakh for two-wheelers |
| Personal accident for the owner-driver | ₹15 lakh cover for death or permanent disability, compulsory unless the owner holds a qualifying personal accident policy |
Third-party (TP) cover is compulsory under Section 146 of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, and OD cover is optional. Owners who need only TP cover, or only standalone OD cover alongside a long-term TP policy, should confirm that option on the quote.
New bikes sold since 1 September 2018 carry a five-year TP policy. On 4 August 2026, the Supreme Court raised the mandatory term to six years for new two-wheelers and directed IRDAI to issue the implementing instructions.
An annual package is renewed every year, which keeps the option to switch insurers, adjust add-ons and reset the IDV at each renewal. A long-term package covers several years with one payment, which avoids yearly renewals and the risk of a lapse, but ties the owner to one insurer for longer. For a new bike on long-term TP, the choice mostly concerns how the OD part is bought, so compare both on the quote.
| Add-on | What it does, as described by Royal Sundaram |
|---|---|
| Depreciation waiver | Full reimbursement for replaced parts in partial loss claims, without deducting depreciation |
| Engine protector | Covers the engine, gearbox and internal parts against damage from water entry or oil leakage |
| Return to invoice | Pays the full invoice value, including registration charges, road tax and insurance cost, on total loss or theft |
| Roadside assistance | Round-the-clock help with breakdowns, tyres, battery, fuel delivery and towing |
| Enhanced personal accident cover | Higher death and permanent disability cover for the driver and passenger, up to ₹50 lakh |
Under the standard wording, claims otherwise deduct 50% depreciation on plastic, rubber and nylon parts and batteries, and 30% on fibreglass, so the depreciation waiver matters most on newer bikes. Check age limits and prices on the actual quote.
TP premium is fixed by the Motor Vehicles (Third Party Insurance Base Premium and Liability) Rules, 2022 and is the same at every insurer. OD premium is priced by Royal Sundaram, so the table uses the former India Motor Tariff rates as a benchmark, for a bike up to five years old in a Zone A city.
| Bike type, example | Annual TP (₹) | OD benchmark, new bike (₹) | OD benchmark, 3-year-old (₹) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Commuter up to 150 cc, Hero Splendor Plus at about ₹77,000 | 714 | 1,249 | 921 |
| 150 cc class, Bajaj Pulsar 150 at ₹1,11,197 | 714 | 1,804 | 1,329 |
| 150 cc to 350 cc, Bajaj Pulsar NS200 at ₹1,38,302 | 1,366 | 2,356 | 1,736 |
| Above 350 cc, KTM 390 Duke R at ₹3,39,001 | 2,804 | 6,051 | 4,459 |
The OD benchmark applies the former tariff rates of 1.708% of the Insured Declared Value (IDV) up to 150 cc, 1.793% for 150 cc to 350 cc and 1.879% above 350 cc, to an IDV of 95% of the price for a new bike and 70% for a 3-year-old one. IDV is the most the insurer pays on theft or total loss. Figures exclude GST, no-claim bonus (NCB), add-ons and personal accident cover, and Royal Sundaram's actual quote can be higher or lower.
NCB, the discount on OD premium for claim-free years, starts at 20% and reaches 50% after five claim-free years. A 3-year-old Pulsar NS200 with three claim-free policy years, for example, earns a 35% NCB, which brings its OD benchmark from ₹1,736 to about ₹1,128.
The claim settlement ratio is the share of claims an insurer settles out of those it receives. As of 26 September 2026, Royal Sundaram did not publish a two-wheeler claim settlement ratio on its bike insurance or claims pages. The figure it does publish, ₹2,500 crore+ of claims settled in FY25, covers all lines of business and shows scale, not the share of bike claims paid.
For a reliable picture, use the insurer's annual public disclosure. IRDAI's guidelines require general insurers to publish each year the number of claims paid and repudiated, with percentages, and their claim turnaround times. Read the three together. The share paid shows how often claims are accepted, the share repudiated shows how often they are rejected, and the turnaround shows how long an owner may wait.
Royal Sundaram states 8,000+ network garages across India on its homepage and on both its bike and motor claims pages. At a cashless garage, the insurer settles the bill directly, and the owner pays only the deductible and costs the policy does not cover. Before buying, use its garage locator to check that an authorised service centre for the bike's brand near home is in the network.
Renew before expiry. A lapsed policy may need a pre-inspection, and NCB is generally lost if renewal is more than 90 days after expiry.
Before paying, set Royal Sundaram's quote against two-wheeler insurance plans from other insurers on Insure24, using the same IDV and add-ons so the comparison is like for like.
Royal Sundaram's bike claims page sets out four steps.
Settlement. The claim is processed under the policy terms, directly with a network garage for cashless claims, or by reimbursement for repairs elsewhere.
KYC document
Additional documents may be needed depending on the claim, such as an FIR for theft or injury to others, and repair invoices and payment receipts for reimbursement claims. Keep the bike unrepaired until the inspection, and photograph the damage and the scene.
| Item | When the owner pays it |
|---|---|
| Compulsory deductible, stated by insurers such as Tata AIG as ₹100 per claim for two-wheelers | On every own-damage claim |
| Depreciation on replaced parts | Unless the depreciation waiver add-on was bought |
| Voluntary deductible | Only if one was chosen for a lower premium |
| Repairs or parts outside the policy cover | Always |
Read the settlement details. Check the deductible and any depreciation deducted before signing off.
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Stated network of 8,000+ garages, consistent across its own pages | No published two-wheeler claim settlement ratio on its bike pages |
| Enhanced personal accident cover up to ₹50 lakh for driver and passenger | The claims figure it publishes covers all lines, not two-wheelers |
| A dedicated add-on for electric and hybrid bikes | Standalone TP and OD options need confirming on the quote |
| Long track record as the first private general insurer licensed in India | Add-on prices and age limits are not listed upfront |
| Round-the-clock motor claims helpline | The documents list is short and further papers may be asked for |
